The town of La Yerba is a small community on the northern side of the San Juan Volcano and is home to Sociedad El Astal (ASTAL). La Yerba’s economy is tied to its two most important crops: coffee and avocados, with one harvest immediately following the other. Lead by their president, Ms. Andrea Flores, ASTAL provides a system of premiums for coffee produced by women, which has enabled the society’s eight female members to get their coffee to market.
For this natural coffee, the cherry is partially dried on site before being taken to the Arrocera Wet Mill for final drying. It is then transported to El Duende Dry Mill - located in nearby Compostela - where it is hulled, cleaned, sorted, graded and finally bagged for export.
